Courses Keynotes Technological Exhibition Enjoy

The two-day symposium will feature leading rock mechanics specialists from around the world who will share a wide range of rock mechanics knowledge, and address common challenges faced in rock characterization, data collection, ground control, monitoring, and more.

The symposium aims to provide attendees with a platform to share case studies and technological innovations, and to hold collaborative discussions on geomechanics and the role they play in daily mining operations. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend both technical sessions and lectures, and to visit the exhibition hall showcasing the latest technologies from international companies dedicated to instrumentation, laboratory testing, rock fall control, and software development.

The lectures will provide theoretical and practical demonstrations of ground support design for underground mines, and numerical model applications for open pit and underground mines.

In addition to the lectures, SRK has assembled a team of distinguished rock mechanics practitioners, who will share their varied experiences in both Open Pit and Underground mines.

Keynote: Mining in weak rock, experiences and learning.
Bruce has over 30 years of experience, specialising in mining rock mechanics; he leads the Vancouver mining rock mechanics group.

Antonio Samaniego, PhD.

Keynote: Narrow Vein Mining in Peru: Learning and Experiences.
Antonio has over 30 years of experience. He focuses on mineral appraisal and feasibility studies, underground mine design and mine planning, slope and underground geomechanics, and mine waste management and is revisor of all geotechnical studies related to rock mechanics in mining and civil engineering projects in Peru.

Carlos Carranza Torres, PhD.

Keynote: Computational tools for the Analysis of Circular failure in rock slopes.
Carlos is Professor of Geotechnical Engineering, at Department of Civil Engineering, University of Minnesota, Duluth Campus. His experience includes Analytical and Numerical Modeling in Geotechnical Engineering. Design of Underground and Surface Excavations. Engineering Geology. Rock Mechanics. Geotechnical Engineering.

Fredy Henríquez, MS.

Keynote: Open Pit Design Based on Rock Mass Displacements.
Fredy's experience ranges from conceptual through feasibility design levels and operations support. His primary areas of expertise include mine operations, mine planning, hard rock and soft rock characterization, underground and open pit stability analysis.

Neil Bar, MS.

Keynote: Practical Application of the Q-slope Method for Rock Slope Engineering(*)
Neil has a diverse range of engineering and related experience in mining, tunnelling and civil engineering projects across Australia and abroad. He has held senior engineering and management roles in several major mining companies including Rio Tinto, BHP, Barrick and Ok Tedi Mining and has experience in in Au, Ag, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn commodities.

Loren Lorig, PhD.

Keynote: Uses and Misuses of Numerical Models in Rock Mechanics. (*)
Loren has over 30 years of experience in Civil and mining projects. Currently, Loren is chief executive officer of Itasca international, a global engineering consulting and software firm, working in areas of geomechanics, hydrogeology.

Discuss, when a numerical model is required, learn the differences between different numerical methods (Finite element, Discrete element, Finite differences), explore the differences between numerical modelling and limit equilibrium.
